“Let Me Eat” and “Let Us Eat”

Every Thursday morning, I watch a Chinese language educational program on TV. In this program, some Chinese people talk about Japanese culture and language. Last theme was the Japanese word that cannot be translate into a Chinese word.

Before having a meal Japanese people greet “いただきます.” “いただきます” means “let me eat.” In Chinese, there is no phrase before having a meal. If they need to say something, they say“吃吧,吃吧 (let’s eat).”

I am interested in the fact that Japanese point of view is at “I” and, contrary, Chinese point of view is at “we.”

Recently in Japan there is getting more people to eat alone. On the other hand, I remember that in China all family happily eat dinner together. Sometime I want to eat lunch quietly alone, and sometime I want to eat with all of family lively. I like not only Japanese way but also Chinese way.
